This painting is inspired by the City of Newark’s seal. The female figures represent Liberty and Justice. Their race and ethnicities have been altered from the original seal to reflect the community of Newark today. While Liberty holds an olive branch, Justice holds half a balance of scale to emphasize the need for more justice throughout the city. In contrast to the original shield, which contains three plows and other Garden State references, this shield contains three balance scales. The background is inspired by Andean/Incan textile patterns to reflect the solidarity that is needed among the black and brown community to advance social justice for all.
